dB is logarithmic. A 3 dB loss is roughly half the signal power; 10 dB is roughly one tenth. Received Wi‑Fi quality still depends on the starting signal, not just the wall loss.

Why wall losses add in dB

Attenuation is commonly expressed in decibels, so the losses along a simplified path can be added. For example, a planning path with one 5 GHz drywall loss of 4 dB and one 5 GHz brick loss of 15 dB produces a combined barrier allowance of 19 dB before distance and other effects are considered.

The values are not promises

Wall attenuation can vary dramatically with thickness, moisture, metal framing, insulation, reinforcement and glazing coatings. Cisco and WatchGuard both present attenuation as typical or estimated values rather than universal constants. RouterReach deliberately follows that approach.

Use this tool to explain a path, not diagnose the whole network

A high wall-loss estimate tells you that the direct path deserves attention. It does not tell you which channel is congested, whether the client has a poor antenna, or whether reflections create a better indirect route. Use the visual planner for layout comparisons and real measurements when precision matters.
