Where should I put my Wi‑Fi router?
Before buying a booster or another mesh node, test the one change that costs nothing: router placement.
Start with the rooms that matter
The “best” router position is not always the geometric centre of the building. Start by identifying the rooms where reliable connectivity matters most: home office, television, gaming setup, bedrooms or garden. A central position is useful only if it creates good paths to those targets.
Keep the router out in the open
A router hidden in a cabinet, behind a television or on the floor has to fight unnecessary local obstruction before the signal even reaches the room. An elevated, open position with space around the antennas is usually a better starting point. Avoid treating a visually convenient cupboard as an RF-neutral location.
Count dense barriers, not just metres
Five metres through an open hallway can be easier than three metres through dense masonry. Cisco notes that Wi‑Fi loses strength through objects and gives typical examples around 3 dB for drywall, 10 dB for brick and 12 dB for concrete, while also warning that thickness, moisture, metal and conductivity change the result. Think vertically in multi-storey homes
A router directly below an important room may be preferable to one farther away on the same floor, but floors can be high-loss barriers—especially reinforced concrete or foil-backed construction. If possible, compare positions near an open stairwell with positions directly beneath dense floor structures.
When moving the router is not enough
If a dense wall or long footprint creates a genuine RF shadow, a second access point or mesh node may be the right answer. With wireless mesh, put the node where it still receives a healthy upstream signal. With Ethernet backhaul, you can place the node where coverage is needed without depending on a strong wireless relay path.
