How to improve Wi‑Fi upstairs

An upstairs dead zone is often a floor-path problem, not simply a lack of router power.

Quick principleModel the path between access point and device: distance + walls + floors + backhaul. A bigger router number on the box does not remove those constraints.

Test the vertical path

A room directly above the router may have a short geometric distance but a difficult floor barrier. Conversely, a slightly farther path via an open stairwell can sometimes work better.

Move the main router before adding hardware

If practical, moving the router higher, more centrally or closer to the stairwell can improve upstairs coverage without adding a relay.

Place wireless mesh where it can still hear the router

A node at the far end of the weak upstairs floor may have poor backhaul. A landing or stairwell location can be a better compromise between upstream quality and room coverage.

Consider a wired upstairs AP

If Ethernet can reach the upper floor, a wired node removes the need to punch the backhaul through the same difficult floor. This is particularly useful in dense or foil-backed construction.
