How to improve Wi‑Fi in the garden

The exterior wall or coated glazing may matter more than the extra few metres of outdoor distance.

Quick principleModel the path between access point and device: distance + walls + floors + backhaul. A bigger router number on the box does not remove those constraints.

Find the least-loss route outside

A router behind a dense exterior wall can lose significant signal before the garden path even begins. A window or door may provide a better route, although coated or metalised glazing can also be high loss.

Do not assume a powerful indoor router is the only answer

Moving the router closer to the garden side of the home may help, but that can worsen coverage elsewhere. A second wired access point can be a cleaner solution when the garden is an important coverage zone.

Weatherproof outdoor access points are a separate category

If reliable coverage is needed well beyond the house, use equipment designed for outdoor installation and follow the manufacturer’s electrical and mounting instructions. RouterReach does not recommend improvised exposure of indoor hardware.

Plan the indoor barrier first
