Why a mesh node count is only a starting point

A home does not have a fixed “square metres per mesh point” number. A compact timber- or plasterboard-framed home can behave very differently from a long brick property or a reinforced concrete apartment. RouterReach therefore uses floor area only as one input, then adjusts the starting estimate for shape, storeys, typical barriers and whether the mesh points can use Ethernet backhaul.

Wireless backhaul needs usable signal before the dead zone

With wireless mesh, the node needs a healthy upstream connection as well as enough signal to serve nearby devices. A common mistake is to put the extra node inside the room where Wi‑Fi is already poor. That can leave the node repeating a weak link. Start partway between the main router and the problem area, then verify with the visual coverage planner.

Wired backhaul changes the calculation

Ethernet backhaul removes the need for each mesh point to maintain a strong wireless path to the previous point. That gives much more freedom to position access points on other floors or beyond dense barriers. In difficult masonry or concrete buildings, one well-placed wired access point can sometimes outperform several wireless repeaters.

How to use the estimate

  1. Start with the suggested number or the lower end of the range rather than buying the maximum immediately.
  2. Place the main router as centrally and openly as practical.
  3. For wireless mesh, place the first node before the weak area, not at the far edge of it.
  4. Use the visual RouterReach planner to test walls, floors and priority rooms.
  5. Verify important rooms with real signal readings after installation.
Planning estimate: actual coverage depends on radio design, client devices, interference, wall thickness, reinforcement, reflections and many other factors. The range is intentionally approximate.
