5 GHz vs 6 GHz range

6 GHz offers valuable spectrum, but it rewards close access-point placement and clean paths.

Quick principleModel the path between access point and device: distance + walls + floors + backhaul. A bigger router number on the box does not remove those constraints.

6 GHz is a short-range capacity tool

The 6 GHz band can provide wide channels and less legacy congestion, but the higher frequency generally has less propagation margin than 5 GHz. That makes it especially valuable near an access point rather than as a universal whole-home replacement band.

Dense walls matter more

The same masonry layout that is merely inconvenient at 2.4 GHz can be a major constraint at 6 GHz. Treat 6 GHz planning as a reason to place access points closer to users and to value wired backhaul.

Wi‑Fi 7 does not repeal physics

Newer standards can improve efficiency, throughput and multi-link operation, but building materials and distance still attenuate radio signals. A newer router in the same poor cupboard may not solve the underlying coverage geometry.

Use 6 GHz where it is strongest

Think of 6 GHz as high-capacity local coverage around well-placed APs. If the home needs strong 6 GHz across several rooms or floors, additional wired access points may provide a more predictable result than a single central router.
