2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz range

2.4 GHz usually wins on reach; 5 GHz often wins on capacity. The useful choice depends on the path, not a universal distance.

Quick principleModel the path between access point and device: distance + walls + floors + backhaul. A bigger router number on the box does not remove those constraints.

Why 2.4 GHz often reaches farther

Lower-frequency radio generally experiences less free-space loss and often penetrates common barriers better. Cisco’s RF reference explicitly notes that 2.4 GHz goes farther than 5 or 6 GHz under comparable conditions.

Why 5 GHz can still be the better connection

Range is only one dimension of Wi‑Fi quality. 5 GHz has more non-overlapping channel capacity and is commonly a better choice for high-throughput devices when the signal is healthy. A close 5 GHz connection can therefore outperform a farther-reaching 2.4 GHz connection.

Band steering is not magic

Modern systems can steer clients between bands, but client devices ultimately make many roaming and band decisions themselves. Good AP placement gives those systems healthy options; poor placement leaves software trying to optimise a weak physical link.

Plan for the use case
